Two Tift County cousins are leading the way in a new farming technique, growing two crops in the same field at the same time.
Take a look at William and Jamie Dillard's 65 acre field, with cotton and cantaloupes growing in the same field.
It's a new interplanting technique they are doing for the second year. They transplant the cantaloupes in March, then about a month later planted cotton. The intergrowing helps them save money on fertilizer and irrigation.
William Dillard said "Able to actually produce two crops at the same time on the same acres. So trying to reduce some overhead costs."
In their first time trying the interplanting technique, the Dillard's produced a yield of 5,000 cantaloupes and 800 pounds of cotton per acre.
So successful, that this year a number of other Tift County farmers are trying the same dual crop planting, and the University of Georgia is researching as well.
