One Dougherty County commissioner is pushing a tax increase so that county police officers can get a raise. Commissioner

Jack Stone says officers are underpaid and need a raise to keep them from leaving for better paying jobs with nearby departments.

Stone says commissioners can't balance the budget on the backs of county employees. He says the only solution he sees would be to increase the millage rate in the unincorporated part of the county.

"They need a raise. They are making about four dollars less than the city police are and that's unheard of. It's been on my agenda for the past two years, or three years, and it's time for us to do something about it."

Stone says he's talking about raises only for patrol officers and others who put their lives on the line-- not all personnel.
