Phoebe's takeover hearing set for Monday

An Albany federal judge will hear arguments Monday over whether he should lift his temporary order preventing Phoebe Putney's buyout of Palmyra Medical Center from going through.

The Federal Trade Commission claims the deal would create a health care monopoly that would drive up health care costs and hinder patient choice.

The FTC asked the court to stop the sale until a full hearing on the legality of the deal scheduled with an administrative law judge in September. Georgia's Attorney General sided with the FTC on the matter.

Judge Louis Sands already granted a temporary injunction. Monday's hearing will start at 9:00 AM.
