Speed blamed for asphalt tanker overturn

An Oxford Construction asphalt tanker truck overturned Thursday morning at the N. Slappey on ramp to the Liberty Bypass, near the All-American Fun Park, blocking the ramp.

The driver of the truck, 63 year old Solomon Breedlove, had visible injuries and firefighters cut the cab of the tractor open to remove him, in a joint effort that took about an hour.

The tanker was carrying a load of hot liquid asphalt. It is not flammable, but APD, along with a trained crew from Oxford Construction Company,  worked to secure the site.

"It was a joint effort by everybody involved. And everyone worked really hard. It was amazing to watch," said APD's Phyllis Banks.

Wrecker trucks pulled the tanker upright, and the ramp reopened before noon.

Breedlove has been driving for Oxford Construction Company for 15 years.  APD's Traffic Unit determined that Breedlove was driving too fast to negotiate the curve, and charges are pending.
