A concerned citizen is stepping up to help the children who have been devastated by the tornado in Oklahoma.More >>
The Dougherty County School System is preparing to finalize the 2011 school year budget.
Ten furlough days, a one percent loss in local taxes, and a million dollar loss from Quality Basic Education funds, are the big issues the school board are faced with.
Teachers are the only employees set to receive a step raise put in place by the government. Board members are required by law to set a budget by June 30th.
They will also advertise public hearings on the budget before it's finalized. Board members are faced with a huge financial task.
"We're trying to do more with less. In the last four years, we've lost $41 million from government grants," said Dougherty County Director of Finance and Operations Robert Lloyd.
The first public hearing on the budget is Monday June 20th at noon and 6pm. The board will finalize everything at their public meeting on June 29th at 12:30.
All meetings will be held downtown in the School Board Administration building.
