ALBANY, GA (WALB) - An MRI on the injured left leg of San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey revealed Posey a fractured fibula and three ruptured tendons in his ankle.
Posey likely will need surgery to repair the ligament damage but the Giants are ready to rule the 2010 National League rookie of the year out for the season.
Posey suffered the injury in a home plate collision with Florida Marlins Scott Cousins Wednesday night.
Posey is expected to be on crutches for at last eight week.
The Giants placed their injured catcher on the 15-day disabled list before Thursday afternoon's game against the Marlins.
Manager Bruce Bochy says it is a blow to the defending World Series champs no matter how long Posey is out of the lineup.
Posey not only had a 13 game hitting streak but he also handled one of the best pitching staffs in baseball.
