Tuesday, Albany city commissioners decided to take their time on redistricting.

Albany recently got new census numbers. Now, they're looking at how they might redistrict to distribute the voting population more evenly.

Commissioners were told if they want to use updated districts for the next election they would have to move very quickly. "We would have to pick a map and present it to the department of Justice literally in the next week. We presented it to the commission and they elected to say no we are not going to jump through those kinds of hoops we would rather do it slowly," said Assistant City Manager Wes Smith.

Commissioners hope to have a proposed map ready to present to the department of justice later this year.

If the Justice Department approves it, those new districts would be used next year.
