The largest hospital in Valdosta is buying out its competition.

South Georgia Medical Center is buying Smith Northview Hospital for 40 million dollars and taking over some of its existing debt.

The acquisition will be finalized following a due diligence period.

South Georgia Medicial Center says combining the facilities will allow them to expand patient services and lower health care costs.

Smith Northview has 600 employees and SGMC has 3,200.

They say no employees will lose their jobs while the transaction is in progress.
