Palmyra Medical Center's sign came down today, but it has nothing to do with Phoebe Putney's effort to buy the hospital.

A lot of people passing by may have wondered though when a large crane showed up to take down the old sign and put up a new one.

Palmyra officials say they bought the sign before the buyout came up.

They decided to go ahead and install it.

Phoebe signed a deal with Hospital Corporation of America - Palmyra's parent company - to buy the hospital for $195 million.

But the Federal Trade Commission is challenging the deal, claiming it would create an illegal health care monopoly.

It could be months before the issue is decided.
