Field Day for Westover and Albany

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -   Westover and Albany High are both in contention for team state titles after the first day of the GHSA boys state track meet in Carrollton.


Westover is second in the AAA team standings.

Patriots are three points behind Carrollton.

Westover's Justin Taylor won the triple jump.

Dontrevious Ousley and Derrick Akins finished first and second in the discus.

In AA, Albany High tied with North Oconee for first with 27 points.

Roscoe Byrd led Albany with a win in the shot put and 5th place finish in the discus.

Thomas County Central's Ray Drew did win the AAAA discus but he did not come close to a state record.

Drew's throw of 183 feet was 17 feet further than second place.

Drew also finished 4th in the shot put for Thomas County Central. 

Other state champions in the field events were Lowndes Kenneth Durden winning his second straight triple jump title.

Bainbridge's Delonte Maristee takes first in AAAA triple jump.

Bearcats are in second place with 19 points in the team competition.

Class A, Schley County's Jeremy Blue wins the discus.

The prelims begin in the track on Friday.
