An off duty Tifton Police officer managed to catch a car burglar red handed as he and his family were on the way home from church.
Detective Lee Dunston was driving down 7th street Sunday night when he noticed flashing lights inside a car parked at Auto Mart.
He says due to a rash of recent entering autos he figured the car had just been hit. But his wife informed him there was still someone in the car.
James Lee Walker Jr. was attempting to steal the car's radio and when he saw Dunston he climbed out the window and took off running.
He was dressed in church clothes and he was unarmed but Dunston chased the man and was able to tackle him near Family Dollar.
His wife called 911, and on duty officers picked the man up..and took him to jail.
"Whether we are wearing the uniform or not, we are mindful of what is going on we try and pay attention to our surroundings. When we see a crime in progress we take action whether we are on duty or not so I'm no different than anyone else there," said Dunston.
James Lee Walker Jr. Was arrested and charged with entering auto and possession of tools in commission of a crime.
