Physician-controlled robotic surgery has become so popular at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, they plan to purchase another machine.

The DaVinci surgical tool allows surgeons to operate through small, dime size incisions.

Doctors say it's a major improvement for surgeons and patients. As many as a dozen doctors at Phoebe are now certified to use the machine.

While it was originally used by urologist and gynecologists, it's now being used by general surgeons increasing the demand.

"If you or I had to have a procedure, we don't want to have to wait to have a procedure so, instead of having our patients and our families have to wait, we'd much prefer to go back to the board and ask for approval to buy a second system,"  said PPMH Chief Operations Officer Joe Austin.

They plan to go to the board after August first to find money for another Davinci. Physicians hope to have the second system in place just after the first of the year.
