ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Darton College athletic director Mike Kiefer said in March he wanted to find a coach who would take the women's basketball program to the next level.
Kiefer found a candidate who has plenty of experience and success at the Division I level.
Darton College Wednesday afternoon introduced Lea Henry as their new women's head basketball coach.
Henry played at Southwest Georgia Academy and at Tennessee under Pat Summitt and later the U.S. Olympic team.
She has more than 300 wins in more than 20 years of head coaching experience.
Including 16 seasons at Georgia State where she led the Lady Panthers to three trips to the NCAA women's tournament.
Henry stepped down at Georgia State last year but sees the opening at Darton a chance to be closer to her family and the chance to get back in national championship contention.
Lea Henry said. "It just kind of worked out. It is a good time in my career to come back home and be around my family. To have the opportunity to help Darton to not only win region championships but hopefully to get to the point to have some good recognition."
Athletic director Mike Kiefer said. "Very exciting opportunity to be able to bring in someone of coach Henry's caliber, experience and the success she has had in the past. I think she is the ideal individual to takes us where we want to go."
Lea Henry has also coached at Mercer University.
