On Tuesday, Albany city commissioners approved a plan to allow water gas and light to purchase power from a natural gas plant in Griffin.
The WG&L board asked for permission to spend $7.6 million for 10 megawatts natural gas-powered electricity for its customers.
Officials say the plan would save money and give them a diversity of fuel sources.
Water Gas and light avoided using natural gas in the past because the cost was high, but prices have gone down.
"It's something good for Albany its something we are doing to try and keep electricity prices as low as we can," said John Vansant, Dir. of Fiscal Affairs.
The purchase of natural gas could save $660,000 a year.
