ATV accident brings up safety concern

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The wife of an Albany man killed in an ATV accident says he died doing what he enjoyed and did often.

39-year-old David Ethridge died Saturday night in the Chickasawhatchee Wildlife Management Area. His wife told us on the phone he and his buddies frequently took their ATV's out on dirt roads.

A man who sells ATV's at Albany Tractor Company says injuries are all too common, and it's important for riders to be aware of their surroundings and to wear proper safety equipment.

"If you ride with other people, it's going to be dusty and hard to see," said Albany Tractor Co. Sales Rep, Josh Herrington.  "You're riding trails and dirt roads. That's where your safety gear comes in handy. Your goggles. Your helmet. A lot of people don't wear helmets. that's the sad thing about it."

We don't know if Ethridge was wearing a helmet. Police say he was riding from the Wildlife Preserve Saturday night when he hit a metal cable dividing the line between state and private property.
