It was billed as the wedding of the century with an estimated two billion television viewers worldwide. Millions in the U.S. got up early to watch Prince William marry Kate Middleton. It's a fairy tale wedding come true with an outrageous million dollar budget. A far cry from the cost of most weddings here in Georgia, which prompted us to compare a Royal Wedding to a Georgia wedding.
Two billion watched Friday morning as Prince William married Katherine Middleton in London, Meghan Gettis and Andy Pate know that won't be the case as they say their vows Saturday.
"No body is DVRing our wedding that's for sure," said Andy. "No body's getting up at 4:30 in the morning to watch us get married," said Meghan.
But just like Kate who kept her wedding gown a secret until the last minute, Meghan plans to do the same.
"I'm very, very excited about my wedding dress, its been probably one of the highlights as the wedding planning has gone," said Gettis.
They too chose a church with special meaning, Porterfield Memorial United Methodist church.
"If we were going to get married in here in Albany, that would fit us pretty well, that was the right place," said Pate.
While the couple doesn't have millions for a Royal Wedding, they like the Prince and now Princess want their wedding to be elegant, not overly lavish, keeping to the average budget for an American wedding between $20,000 and $23,000.
"We did set a budget and we've tried really hard to stick with that budget. In fact we were at Doublegate this week and had to alter some things about the reception," said Gettis.
Unlike Kate and William, there were restraints.
"We're not royalty and we're not going to have a lights out affair, reception to remember," said Meghan.
Like the royal couple, they too had a hard time narrowing the guest list.
"One of the most difficult tasks with the wedding was the guest list, you want the people who are important to you to be a part of that day but it's really easy for it to get out of hand," said Gettis.
Meghan was watching with her sisters this morning as the royal couple said their I do's. Her sisters will serve as her bridesmaids much like the royal wedding.
"I have three other sisters and they're each going to be a bridesmaid," said Gettis.
"My best man is my father and I've got some childhood friends and fraternity brothers serving as my groomsmen," said Pate.
Showing us her cathedral length veil, she remembered seeing some of the items from Princess Diana's wedding on tour in Atlanta.
"She had these little slippers, especially made for her. It is kind of cool to think I'm getting married around the same time," said Meghan.
The couple showed us some of the gifts they received in advance of the big day, special items, including three generations of silver passed down from their family. Like the royal couple, they too are anxious for the honeymoon, although they don't expect they'll be hounded by the paparazzi.
"The Punta Cana side of the northeast side of the Dominican Republic had great beaches, no undertow, relatively safe," said Pate.
While their south Georgia wedding is different from what billions watched this morning in London, it's hard to argue what the priest said that every wedding is a royal wedding to the couple.
"Nobody's going to remember what your table decorations looked like or whether or not you had the biggest best floral arrangement in the church we just, I don't know I've become very realistic about what that day is and ultimately it's about us," said Gettis.
Making this south Georgia wedding and the family they create just as special.
Our south Georgia couple are planning to wed at 2:00 PM Saturday. They too got engaged in the fall, a month before William and Kate. Meghan and Andy also pointed out they set their wedding date first.
