East Albany Walmart gearing up for grand opening

Posted: Updated:

ALBANY, GA (WALB) – It's less than a month away until East Albany's Walmart Supercenter is officially open for business.

Store officials provided a tour Wednesday afternoon showing off the all the store has to offer.

More than 100 employees are already on the job unloading 8 daily truck loads of merchandise and stocking the shelves in preparation for the grand opening May 18th.

"We currently have about 160 on site," said store manager Andy Carter.

"They're basically going through the unloading process with our trucks. We're in the process right now of getting our shelves stocked and our features built in preparation for the grand opening date," he said.

The store itself is designed with region specifics in mind from data gathered through Walmart's home office - a program called "Store to Community".

"Our goal is to serve the community and through home office and through data reports. We then tailor the store around the needs of the community," Carter said.

The store features a grocery and clothing section, bakery, electronics department, deli, lawn and garden center, game room, Subway, and an in store pharmacy.

All this equates to jobs - some 300 of them - in a time when they're in short supply.

"Our goal is going to be around 300. Right now we have about 65 requisitions left open that we're still taking applications on and going through the hiring process with."

Carter says he's looking forward to the store opening and believes it will revitalize east Albany.

"It has created a lot of jobs, and we're also trying to bring those low prices to this side of town as well and offer a service to them that they haven't had on this side of town," he said.

Walmart will operate from 6 a.m. to midnight, 7 days a week.

Anyone interested in applying for a job should do so online at Walmart.com or pick up an application form at any area Walmart store.
