LANIER COUNTY, GA (WALB) -  A man suspected of brutally stabbing his wife nearly two dozen times is in jail Thursday.

Investigators say 29-year old Julio Lopez attacked his wife and took off Wednesday morning.

He was picked up around four this afternoon walking down Highway 168 in Berrien County nearly naked.

Investigators in Berrien County picked up 29-year old Julio Lopez near the Ten Mile Creek bridge on Highway 168. He was carrying a butcher knife and wearing nothing but a bath mat wrapped around him. He told investigators he spent the night under that bridge. He took off Wednesday morning in his blazer after investigators say he beat and stabbed his wife inside this yellow camper in Oakridge Subdivision.

"I hate seeing stuff like that happen," said Alecia King of Lanier County. "My heart goes out to people like that."

Linda Lopez was able escape with 21 stab wounds and get help from her sister who lives in front of the camper.

Lopez was in the Berrien County Jail. Nashville Police had domestic violence charges on him. His charges were reduced and he was released earlier this week. He and his wife then moved to Lanier County and where the latest attack happened.

"If more women would come up say hey look I'm in this situation, we could get more people off the street," said King.

Lopez was getting his paper work done to become a U.S. Citizen.

"I don't believe we should have illegal immigrants in our country," said Austin Tomberlin of Lanier County.

Linda Lopez is still in the hospital and Juilo Lopez is on his way to Lanier County.

Julio Lopez faces several charges including aggravated assault.
