ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Advocates for downtown Albany hope as many as 10 new stores may open there in the next few months.

Downtown manager Aaron Blair's goal is to increase retail capacity downtown by 25 percent by the end of this year.

That means 13 new stores need to open.

He says eight are already on board, and another should sign on by the end of the week.

As Blair spoke to the Rotary club Tuesday, another businessman approached him about possibly opening a downtown business.

"We're blowing out our goal and we intend to actually, so it wasn't a surprise to us. But to have a lot of new businesses and see people get excited about opening businesses downtown, it makes it more fun," Blair said.

Two of those stores are opening next week. The General Store and Verge, a high-end consignment shop open on March 1.

A produce store is also in development. It opens in April.
