Randolph Co. crash kills two, injures five

RANDOLPH COUNTY, GA (WALB) - A head-on collision in Randolph County killed two people and injured five others on Highway 82. Three children and two adults were hurt when an SUV crashed into a car around 7:00 Sunday morning just outside of Shellman.

Dania DeVane lives right next to the curve. She heard the collision and saw the damage outside her window. She's seen several fatalities in the 50 years she's lived here.

"It was very upsetting and I don't know how I'm going to sleep tonight," said DeVane.

The man in the SUV was driving west on Highway 82 when troopers say he crossed the double yellow line near a curve and hit the Mercury Grand Marquis about four miles west of Shellman. The driver, 24-year-old Christopher Lehr, and the passenger and his wife Sandra Lehr, were in the front seat. They died on impact.

Three kids and another adult were inside the car. Two kids were rushed to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. The third kid and the adult were air-lifted to a hospital in Dothan. When DeVane saw emergency crews, she thought of her family who lives right across the street on Hwy 82.

" Every little thing that happens, I'm here and looking and seeing if it was my family," added DeVane.

DeVane says people fly down Highway 82. Even though a sign warns drivers of a curve ahead, there's no sign to reduce the speed. Neighbors say 55 miles per hour around this curve is just too fast.

Troopers say the couple had been wearing their seat belts; however, the kids were not. A total of six people were in car which is made to seat five. The three kids and adult are in critical condition. The Driver of the SUV was sent to Phoebe.

Neighbors say the fog was thick Sunday morning, but don't know if that was a factor in the wreck. We'll know more after the GSP Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team (SCRT) investigates the cause of the wreck.

No charges have been filed at this time.
