ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The bright lights shined on the Monroe Tornadoes Saturday night as the boys in yellow and green edged out a hot Crisp County team for the region 1-3A title, 48-44 was the final.
It was Monroe's first region championship in 5 years after losing their previous 2 title games. The teams went back on forth in the final quarter but senior Ted Hosley had two key drives to the bucket to seal the victory.
Ted Hosley said "All year we've been preaching brotherhood, brotherhood. We have 4 seniors on this team, I asked the 11 juniors and the 1 sophomore to have our and they came through in the region championship. This is something I've wanted for a long time ever since I came to Monroe."
Head coach Marquis Davis said "To get a win against them, a team who had momentum at this time to get this win. I think it's good for our guys to carry into the first round of the playoffs."
Earlier in the evening the Dougherty Lady Trojans stunned Westover in the girls region final 23-19. The Lady Patriots had beaten Dougherty by double digits in their 2 regular season meetings but the Lady Trojans came out and played their zone defense to near perfection.
Head coach Charlene Jackson praised her coaching staff and her players for the big win.
Charlene Jackson said "We know that defense can create offense and the kids have bought into it. Coach Jordan is responsible for the defense and he does a phenomenal job and we're proud of the team effort that went into winning this championship."
Senior Jasmine Lavant said "We came in here confident to know that we were going to win. We never feed into what people said about us because we knew that we could do it."
