ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  Valdosta state head coach David Dean didn't see his shadow on Groundhog Day.So, for the second straight year Valdosta State will start spring football early.

Blazers will hold the first of 15 spring practices on Friday.

Head coach David Dean says the coaching staff are wanting to find out if all the players who redshirted last season are ready to contribute this season.

Most of those players are on defense where assistants Seth Wallace and Earl Chambers are going to be co-defensive coordinators this year.

Those young players have big shoes to fill after VSU lost several talented defensive starters including Larry Dean the national DII player of the year.

David Dean said. "We are very athletic at linebacker. We are very athletic in the secondary. We have good speed. We are just young. The one thing we will do is they will be coached hard. I think they have got a great attitude."
