VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - A well-respected political figure and former Lowndes County Sheriff passed away Saturday.

G Robert Carter died Saturday morning after suffering from health complications. He was 86-years old.

Carter served 10 years on the Lowndes County Commission, and he was the sheriff from the mid 70s through the early 90's.

Carter played a large role improving the county jail and administrative judicial complex. A city spokesperson told WALB the community loved him and will miss him dearly.
