ALBANY, GA (WALB) – All was quiet Monday night at Nettie Walker's Ashburn home.
"Me and mama we're sitting in here watching TV. The national news had just went off," she said.
But Nettie Walker never imagined that what happened next would end up making the news.
"All of a sudden that door busted open," said Walker.
Three masked men burst into her living room demanding money. Walker reached for the phone to call 911, but it was knocked out of her hand. She and her 90-year-old mother were left helpless.
"One of them held me down, while the other one put a knife to my throat with the other hand," said Walker, a beautician who has called Ashburn home for more than 34 years.
"I started praying. I said he was going to kill me. So I started praying for him and me and everybody else,"
But Walker says through this frightening ordeal she remained calm. She thought back to her husband, this while a knife was at her neck and her home was being ransacked.
"I'm thankful I was married to a military man," she said.
In the corner of the living room, just above the couch where she thought she might die, is a picture of young WWII soldier named Charles Walker. He died 12 years ago, but she says she felt he was there..protecting her.
"I think he was here in spirit because he always warned me about things like that."
For nearly 20 minutes she was held down. The home invaders placed a towel over her mother's head as they grabbed her jewelry and phone.
"I never did lose it," she admits.
When the robbers took off, she set off her burglar alarm. Within 3 minutes Ashburn Police officers arrive at her West End Avenue home. Less than 3 hours later, a traffic stop led them to their suspects.
Just miles away from the crime scene, a patrol officer arrested 22-year-old Malcom Davis and 18-year-old Adrean Mangum. They, along with a 15-year-old, are charged with armed robbery.
Police say they found evidence to link to them to the home invasion and another burglary in the area.
Davis was out on bond at the time of his arrest. He was charged in connection with a 2010 shooting in Ashburn.
"No one should have go through that. I don't care how old you are or how young you are. I'm just thankful that God looked after me," said Walker.
She says she'll follow her late husband's advice and always keep the burglar alarm on. And while she says this won't keep her down, she's more cautious of her surroundings.
Davis, Mangum, and the juvenile remain in jail without bond.
