ALBANY, GA (WALB)- With hectic schedules and long hours at work, it can be hard to keep that New Year's resolution. But how about a class that offers muscle toning and cardio at the same time?
It's called spinning and classes are offered at just about every gym in the country. Spinning offers you a great way to stay active when it's to cold outside.
The lights are dim and music is just right for a scenic ride to weight loss city. When it comes to spinning you either love it or hate it. "I've been doing it about six months. I love it because it's a push and challenge," said Neely Shell.
"Spinning is an alternative workout especially during winter months," said Spin Instructor Michelle Moulton. It is basically a room full of exercise bikes and sweaty riders. And they're burning between 600 to 800 calories.
"It's a great way to hit your glutes and hamstrings," said Moulton. The little red tension wheel on the bike creates resistance. If you're hardcore, you can make it feel like you're climbing Mount Everest.
Or if you're a lightweight, you can tone it down to fell like you're riding on Albany's flat roads. "With the tension knob we can imitate sprints and heavy climbs. Since we don't have them in albany, we imitate them on our bikes," said Moulton.
"Michelle creates a mountain in the room for you to climb and challenge yourself. You leave the class climbing two hills and three mountains," said Shell.
The only downside, you're inside, and after all that pedaling, you never get anywhere. But for some people, that's just fine. "I had old sports injuries and it's a lot easier. The impact is not as hard as if you we're riding, running or dealing with elements," said Shell.
PT's Gym's spin class starts at 5am, it'll have you geared up for the rest of the day. "When I go to work I have the bragging rights of actually going to the gym at 5. I also have way more energy throughout the day," said Shell.
"I"am a racer so what I try to bring to my class is real racing experiences," said Moulton.
Give it a try and see if you've got what it takes. And think about all those calories you're burning.
You'll be in tip top shape in no time. Spinners usually develop their own pace. The intensity of the class depends on how fast you pedal and the resistance setting.
So, like everything else, you get out of it what you put in. Spinning classes are taught at PT Gym, Tony's, and the YMCA in Albany.
