VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - After coming within a run of winning a national championship in softball last year, the Valdosta State Lady Blazers are the team to beat in division two this season. The Lady Blazers are ranked number one in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association preseason rankings.
VSU is ranked ahead of North Georgia and last year's national champion Hawaii Pacific.
The Lady Blazers return pitchers Holly Satterfield and Margaret Carter and add Krystle Robinson and Brianna Hancock.
The lineup includes shortstop Marti Littlefield, Morgan Johnson and Collete Rollins.
The lineup will get a boost with the addition of former Lee County star Sam Posey who will play third base.
Head coach Thomas Macera said. "We were national runner-ups last year and it was very disappointing to fall short on a game that could have gone either way for us. We just want to work hard and try to get back there and put ourselves in another opportunity to try to win it."
The number one VSU softball team opens the season Saturday at the Georgia Southwestern tournament in Americus.
