ALBANY, GA (WALB) –Many Albany veterans support a bill that would make Veterans Day an official state holiday.
Veterans Day is the only federal holiday Georgia does not observe.
A bill introduced on the Georgia House floor would require state government offices and schools to close in observance of the November 11th holiday.
Air Force veteran Herb Garner says the state should officially recognize Veteran's service. "They do. They deserve it. And that's what our job here is. To keep veterans in memory and keep them in our minds here," said Garner.
Many state legislators say they want schools open on Veterans Day so veterans can talk to students in their classrooms.
The legislator who introduced the bill says he'll keep bringing it up until it passes.
