ALBANY, GA (WALB) – Construction on a Walmart store in East Albany is almost complete.  We stopped by Tuesday morning as workers were grading the parking lot.

The building isn't far from completion.  Across the parking lot, construction of another shopping strip is also wrapping up.

Ward One Commissioner Jon Howard says he drives by the site frequently.  He's so excited and thankful for the development on the East side.

Just a few years ago, he lost three friends to senseless murders in this same track of land when a trailer park was here.  He said, "It was an eye sore, infested with drugs, crime and other vices taking place here, but to see Walmart is finally putting the foundation here, almost complete, it's exciting to be a citizen of East Albany."

Construction is expected to finish in late May.  A grand opening could happen around July.
