VSU defensive coordinator leaving for DI job

VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Valdosta State head coach David Dean did not hesitate when he said he had the best defensive coordinator in Division II football in Joe Cauthen.

The only bad thing about having a good DII coordinator is they get job offers from Division I programs.

That is exactly what has happened.

VSU defensive coordinator Joe Cauthen is leaving the Blazers to become linebackers coach at Middle Tennessee.

Cauthen was hired by David Dean when he became the Blazers head coach four years ago.

Last year, VSU's defense was in the top 20 in scoring defense and led the nation in touchdowns scored by interceptions.

A school spokesman says head coach David Dean is planning to fill the defensive coordinator's position as soon as possible.

Joe Cauthen isn't the only new assistant with VSU ties to join the Middle Tennessee staff.

Former VSU quarterback coach Buster Faulkner is joining the Blue Raiders as their quarterback coach.

Faulkner worked last season as Chris Hatcher's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Murray State in Kentucky.
