ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  The Albany City Commission wants a day reporting center in the city instead of Lee County. They've asked the Dougherty County government to help pay for it.

County officials said they could help fund the center, but it may not be for a few years.

The state proposed opening the day reporting center, keeping non-violent offenders out of jail. While the state is willing to pay to operate the facility, they've asked the city to fund the building.

The city found a downtown site they can rent for the center. County Administrator Richard Crowdis says the county could help, but may have to wait until their finances improve.

"My recommendation back to the commission is that in a future fiscal year you know we could pledge to participate in a percentage of the annual rent for wherever that location will ultimately be decided by the city commission," Crowdis said.

The city is still in a discussion phase and the County Commission must still vote on the proposal.

Both City and County Officials will meet again to discuss the issue. Both hope a Day Reporting Center could potentially cut costs at the Dougherty County Jail.
