ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The American Red Cross needs the public's help. It's down on donations, and the recent ice and snow may be to blame for a recent blood shortage.

The cold snap made it tough for people to get out and hard for Red Cross workers to pickup or transport blood.

It's roughly 2,200 units short as of Friday. Even though all blood types are needed, the donor center always needs type O and B.

"Blood has an expiration date," said Red Cross Team Supervisor, Lena Thomas. "It's only good for 42 days, so we have to constantly replenish the supply. This time of year, it's already hard to get people to come in and donate. The winter storms have made it even harder."

It's not too late to give. The donor center on Dawson road will be open Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and MLK day from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.  You can also make an appointment by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS.
