ALBANY,  GA (WALB) –  A Red Cross volunteer tells us 12,000 baby chickens were killed during a chicken house fire at International Poultry Breeders that occurred around midnight in Colquitt County.

The chicken house sits on a farm on Perry Batts Road just outside Norman Park.

Firemen were able to save adjoining chicken houses after battling the smoke and flames for more than two hours.

The company suspects a heater malfunction caused the fire.
