ALBANY, GA (WALB) – It could be two weeks before officials know what killed three endangered Whooping Cranes found dead in Calhoun County.
The birds bodies were sent for necropsies Thursday. U. S. Fish and Wildlife officials say it was unusual to find all three birds in one location. Three dead cranes were found by hunters in Calhoun County.
Fish and Wildlife officials say before turning up in south Georgia the birds were last recorded to have been in Kentucky.
The three dead cranes were released in October with eight other first-year birds in Wisconsin. Another bird was killed by an animal shortly after the group's release.
