TIFTON, GA (WALB) –Counterfeit checks bearing the name of a popular south Georgia bank are showing up in Tifton.

A book keeper at South Georgia Banking Company says 17 counterfeit checks have been returned in the last few weeks.

They've also gotten phone calls about others.

Apparently a customer purchased a cashiers check then someone else made copies of it. The fake checks are green. Authentic cashier's checks are blue.

The counterfeit items display the routing number 061211870, which is assigned to South Georgia Banking Company.

If someone tries to get money from you in exchange for a cashier's check, you should be suspicious.
