ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Albany Police are warning everyone not to fire guns to ring in the New Year. Officers say that's no way to bring in the new year or any other holiday because its dangerous.

While many consider firing a gun into the air to bring in the new year a tradition it can also lead to jail time. Police say firing a gun in the air can put innocent people at risk because what goes up must come down and bullets come down at a speed great enough to kill you. They want neighbors to report gunfire if they hear it on their street.

"Not only are we asking people not to participate in firing their weapons on New Year's Eve, we're also asking individuals who hear gunshots fired in their neighborhood or in their area whether they know where the shots are coming from or not to call police," said Phyllis Banks, Albany Police Media Manager.

It's illegal to discharge a firearm within the city limits. In 2008, Albany Police responded to 44 gunfire calls between New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
