ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  There's still confusion over whether the Albany Animal Control Officers should pick up stray cats in the city.

Donna Bryant brought the problem to light after finding dozens of cats living behind her Ledo Road business. Bryant told us she finally got a call back from Animal Control who told her their hands were tied, they couldn't help.

They told her, and us when we called, they've been asked by the city commission not to pick up cats because of some questions they've received from a local group over the new ordinance which would allow animal control to pick up cats.

With freezing temperatures this week, she's urging both sides to reach a compromise.

"I hope that they do something, that that group picks up the cats and finds home for them, or that group picks up cats and bring them to the shelter and let the shelter find homes for them, but don't just pick them up neuter them and then dump them back out because that's not helping," Donna Bryant said.

City Attorney Nathan Davis says stray cats are covered and animal control has the power to pick them up. When we questioned City Manager Al Lott about the commission directing Animal Control not to pick up the cats, he promised to look into it and get back to us.
