OCILLA, GA (WALB) – An Irwin County teen was gunned down in broad daylight Monday on one of the main streets through Ocilla.

Police say 19-year-old Matthew Mobley was walking on North Irwin Avenue in front of a crowded gas station when someone opened fire from a passing car.

"Somebody came in my store and said, Somebody's shot. Somebody's shot," said Sunny Patel.

He owns the Citgo station across the street from where the drive-by happened. He was in the back of the store when he heard those words around 2 o'clock.

"I saw a lot of people over there. I saw he was shot and was on he ground," he said.

Mobley was taken to Dorminy Medical Center in Fitzgerald where he later died. Hours later, blood stains on the asphalt marked the spot where he collapsed after being shot in the shoulder.

A shooting turned homicide investigation, GBI agents were called in to assist Ocilla Police in tracking down the drive-by shooters.

"It happened in broad daylight. There were witnesses and there were two vehicles that were part of the drive by shooting that we know of at this time," said Det. Doug Douglas, Ocilla Police.

Investigators believe Mobley was walking down North Irwin with another man following closely behind when several shots rang out. While it's still early in the investigation, it doesn't appear as though the shooting was random.

Police were able to track down a suspect vehicle which they impounded for evidence and took one man into custody. As of late Monday night, he had not been charged.

The shooting has many in Ocilla on edge, wondering why someone would target a 19-year-old former high school wrestler.

"He was a good wrestler and good to anybody he knew. He didn't deserve to have what happened to him at all. I never saw that coming," said former teammate Caleb Grimsley.

Grimsley was one of many Ocilla residents who heard the shocking news about the shooting and Mobley's death. In a city that averages one homicide a year, it was unexpected to both residents and investigators.

"It's the first time to my knowledge it's ever happened in Irwin County in broad daylight and on a main highway," said Douglas.

If you happened to be near the 900 block of North Irwin Avenue around 1:45 Monday afternoon, investigators say you could have information that might help them.

They want you to call Ocilla Police.
