School board adopts ethics code

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Dougherty County School Board adopted a new ethics code, but not without a lengthy discussion.

The state requires the board to adopt a model that keeps board members from voting immediate family into a school system position.

School board attorney, Tommy Coleman, revised the code to include immediate family up to second cousins.

David Maschke proposed a revision excluding all family-broader than second cousins.

The board voted 4 to 1 to go with the state option. Maschke says his broader option would have allowed more transparency - eliminating any conflict of interest if board members were to elect family members.
