ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Sprinkler systems caused some icy conditions across Albany that had pedestrians and cars slipping and sliding this morning.

Public Works crews used a blow torch to clear the ice at the intersection of South McKinley Street and Oglethorpe Boulevard.

Many sprinkler systems are on timers, and with temperatures dropping into the 20's and maybe the teens next week, public works asks businesses to turn off those systems until the weather warms up.

"We're just trying to remind the businesses if they would just kindly shut off their sprinklers, because it may result in an ice freeze on the sidewalk or on the street which may cause an accident and we're trying to keep the citizens protected from slips and falls," said Street Department General Supervisor Joria West.

Several sidewalks iced over this morning making it hazardous for walkers.

Crews put down sand where they could but say they must come back later and clean that sand up.
