ALBANY, GA (WALB) –   Law enforcement officials and gun experts say gun locks are a necessity for any gun owner to protect their families, and urge you to check your weapons to prevent any other tragedies.

Gun locks come in a number of styles and types, to fit different types of guns.

A barrel lock goes in the chamber so no rounds can be fired. A trigger lock style fits over the entire trigger region, so it can not fired.

It all starts with "Choosing the right lock," said Backwoods Outdoors gun salesman Chuck Cobb. "Each manufacturer chooses the lock and it comes from the manufacturer in the box. Older guns you can contact the manufacturer and they still make locks to match their guns."

Federal law says every new gun comes equipped with the proper lock. Experts say a good firearm dealer should be able to match your gun to the proper lock, and show you how to properly install it.

The locks cost between $10 and $20.
