ALBANY,  GA (WALB) – The people living at 2400 Hemlock Street were in their den when they noticed the fire in their fireplace getting out of control Sunday night They called 911 and firefighters put out the flames and smoldering fireplace and chimney around 7:15.

Battalion Chief Clarence Haynes hopes other homeowners remember to take precautions before starting a fire as the winter-like temperatures roll in.

"They need to have the fireplace clean every year. The chimney needs to be cleaned and checked and whenever you start a fire in the fireplace the first time of the season make sure it's clean," said Haynes.

The family made it out safely. No one was hurt.
