ALBANY, GA (WALB) – One Tift County commissioner is trying to make sure everyone in her district stays warm during the next few months.

Commissioner Melissa Chevers stated a coat drive after she saw a need, she collect a lot more coats than expected the original goal was 100.

"We've collected 214 coats for now it just took off like a wildfire," said Chevers.

And the coat drive has since branched off.

"My slogan for that is 'sock it to them with love.' We have a lot of kids in our community that don't have something as basic as socks. I'm starting a sock drive so if people want to go ahead and give me a call I'm more than happy to pick them up."

Commissioner Chivers has already received calls asking for these coats.

"Once you get out there and talk with your constituents and find out what the need it, you have to try and meet that need."

Monday the coats and socks will go to Tifton DEFACS and Housing Authority to be distributed to selected families.

To donate, or if you need a coat you can contact the commissioner at (229) 326-0241.
