ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  A Dougherty County elementary school is being used as a model for the nation.

Alice Coachman Elementary Principal Pat Victor was one of three principals selected nationwide to speak in Washington about the significance of Blue Ribbon Schools. Alice Coachman was one of 314 Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence nationwide for 2009. Victor talked about the students successes despite the socioeconomic challenges. She says the designation helped changed the mindset of students and teachers.

"It has meant chest out from the students to say we have been recognized for doing something great for our hard work for our success. It has meant to the teacher that we have been recognized for doing a great job implementing effective teaching strategies, best teaching practices and now we know we can do it better, so we're going beyond expectations now," said Victor.

A documentary made at the school was shown to hundreds of principals and school leaders and is on the Department of Educations web site. Victor says it's important to give students a taste of success early in life so they'll continue to strive for it in later years.
