ALBANY, GA (WALB) – The city of Albany is working to get kids involved in arena football.
The Albany Panthers Southern Indoor Football League team are working with the Albany Recreation and Parks Department to start a youth league. Just like the Panthers, the teams will play in the Civic Center before the Panther games in the spring. Registration will begin after the first of the year and practices will start in February. Recreation and parks officials say it offers children from six through 12 another sport to get them off the couch and active, but it could take some practice.
"We want the citizens of Albany to get up, get out, and get healthy. We'd like to reduce our youth obesity rate, we're like to make sure that we are a healthy community," said Suzanne Davis, Albany Recreation and Parks Director.
"It's a little different and I think it will be something new for them to be introduced to the game, that's why we're going to have our players, coaches and myself introduce them and teach them the rules of the game," said Will Carter, Albany Panthers.
The league will have a limited number of spots for players. Registration is $35.00 and includes shoulder pads. Each child participating will get a free season pass to the Albany Panthers games. Sign ups are Saturday January 22nd from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Albany Civic Center and February 5th from 9:00 Am to 5:00 PM at the Albany recreations & Parks Office 1301 N. Monroe Street (Tift Park). The Child must be present at registration and you must provide the child's birth certificate. Registration is $35.00
