ALBANY, GA (WALB) - It was North Alabama defense that turned four Valdosta State first quarter turnovers into three touchdowns as the Lions defeated the Blazers 43-20 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Playoffs Saturday afternoon at Bazemore-HYder Stadium.

Valdosta State racked up 203 total yards of offense, including 132 rushing and 71 through the air. Ronnye Nelson rushed for a personal best 122 yards while reeling in four passes for 15 yards.  Bret Whitmire completed 14-of-18 passes for 62 yards and a score.  VSU ended up with 7 turnovers on the day.

Head coach David Dean said, "I am very proud of these kids.  I am proud of these guys.  They could have very easily said we have lost this game.  But they bowed up.  They came back out in the second half and cut it to two scores.  We had some momentum but we could not stop them on that one drive where they kicked the field goal."

VSU finishes the season at 8-3
