GSC honors Dean and Dean

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Valdosta State Blazers are focused on Saturday's first round playoff game against North Alabama.

With the regular season over, the Gulf South Conference handing out postseason awards on Thursday.

Dean wins the honor for the first time after leading the Blazers to their first conference title in 2004.

VSU shared that title and coach Dean is sharing the coach of the year award with Harding's Ronnie Huckeba and Henderson's Scott Maxfield.

Linebacker Larry Dean is the conference's defensive player of the year.Larry Dean is a first team all-conference selection for a second straight year.

Dean led the conference in tackles and his seventh nationally.

The former Tift County Blue Devil only holds the VSU career tackle record but also the Gulf South Conference.


Defensive lineman DeMario Jones and cornerback Stevie Harden are also first team picks.

Albany's Ronnye Nelson earns his first ever first team all-conference honors the all purpose player on offense.

Defensive back Dudley Spence and punter Jack Fulford were second team selections.

VSU hosts North Alabama on at one o'clock Saturday.


Jones was a first team pick in 2008 but missed most of last year with an injury.
