Peach State turns to GOP

ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  Georgia Republicans are picking up steam-- and seats in the state house. Not only did the GOP pick up three seats in last week's elections, but three Democratic legislators have switched parties.

Longtime Democrats Bob Hanner of Parrott in District 148 and Gerald Greene of Cuthbert are changing their party affiliation. Between the two of them, they have more than 63 years of legislative experience.

Bob Hanner said he's frustrated with not being able to represent South Georgia effectively because the Democrats are in the minority.

"I'd rather be at that table and have something to do with what comes out, rather than just sit back and fight whatever I see. I think it's important that we are at the table and we can have a positive effect on the issues especially water and economic development," said Hanner.

Alan Powell of Hartwell also switched to the GOP, and Representative Ellis Black of Valdosta says he's considering a switch because he think the Democrat party is headed in the wrong direction.

The Republican party now has 111 seats in the 180 member chamber.
