ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  With low temperatures dropping into the 30's over the next several days it may be the first time many people are using their heaters.

The Albany Fire Department warns everyone to clean those heaters before their turned on. If you don't, dust built up on the heater can cause a foul smell or cause the heater to smoke. Fire fighters say they're inundated with calls, a lot which turn out to be false alarms the first time people use their heaters. They also caution those using space heaters to keep the heaters away from drapes or other materials when they're plugged in.

"You want to examine the chord make sure it's working, make sure there's nothing wrong with the chord itself. Also you want to plug that chord directly into your outlet, you don't want to use extension chords and a space heater. Not only that, you don't want to run that chord up under a rug or anything else," said Assistant Chief Sebon Burns, Albany Fire Department.

Fire fighters say before building a fire in your fireplace its also a good idea to have it cleaned out.
