Dougherty continues penny-on-the dollar tax

ALBANY, GA (WALB) –  People who spend money in Dougherty County will continue to pay an extra penny in sales tax.  That's because 68.9% of the voters voted to continue the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax.

You can drive around town and see several SPLOT projects in the works, like the new EMS station and the Public works facility.

In the future, a large part of the SPLOT money in Dougherty County will go towards the improvement on infrastructure around the county. It also allows the county to purchase updated equipment for public safety and fire. County officials say many of the projects would not be possible without the one cent sales tax.

"Make sure we have strong infrastructure make sure our folk have sufficient tools and equipment to do what they do and accomplish all of that without having to raise additional taxes," said Dougherty Co. Commissioner John Hayes.

WALB covered over 100 races and ballot questions election night, and you can see all the results at the top of our website.
