City of Damascus was near failure

DAMASCUS, GA (WALB) – The City of Damascus has seen better days, it has been plagued with budget issues, inconsistent leadership, and a host of water and well problems.

Current mayor, Nathaniel Thompson says he and his three council members are getting things on track.

The city's account was recently down to only $200, council member Johnny Phillips gave thousands to pay the bills.

Thompson says they want to continue to improve the city. His position is on the ballot Tuesday.

Hoyt Patterson and Gloria Roberts McMurray are running against Thompson. In addition to the three mayoral candidates two city council positions are also on the ballot .

If the city's financial woes had worsened, it could have been absorbed into Early County.
